Jungle DJ/Collector/Producer: East Coast, USA.

Collecting vinyl like a maniac since '96; always been especially hooked on
the '94-'95 mashup & ragga t'ing.

The more intensely mashed up & processed, the better.

1 = whatever...total BS
2 = pretty much crap IMHO . . do not want.
3 = filler records . . alright to have, but I never think to play these tunes
4 = nice tune(s) . . at least one track on the plate makes it worth owning; I'd definitely play these given the chance

I don't want your e-bay auction lists unless you're in the US.

I'll consider offers on (and have sold) items in my collection, but be prepared to

Various - Club Saturn EP - 21-Nov-08 06:12 PM
I'll have to say that "Nights" is actually the stand-out track on this EP -- really smoooooth '96 drumfunk from the one Paradox; classically chilled d'n'b vibes to make your mind wander. Well done.

I'm a huge fan of Remarc, and I honestly only bought the record for "Virtua Cop"; unfortunately, it sounds kinda half-baked to me, and didn't get a proper mixdown IMHO. It IS a decent amen-driven track on that late-'95 gangsta junglist tip (sirens n gunshots, etc.), but it just doesn't express like his other work. Tweaking the levels helps very little.

On the flip, B1 and B2 are both pretty forgettable, just run of the mill repetitive '96-style steppers. Not a whole lot of creativity there (:YAWN:)

Hired Gun - Pow Pow / What Goes On - 11-Jul-08 06:48 PM
In line with the previous review - gotta agree that this is a really interesting early jungle / drum'n'bass release, indicative of what was to come. Two perfect examples of the different forthcoming styles, and well produced - sounds great on a home stereo or a megawatt system.

On side A, you get a dark-rolling synth bassline, punchy mashed up amen break, nice tuff ragga sampling, and hooky downpitched bells. Note that it's also at a higher BPM than most of the other releases of the time.

B side is just as dope as A, but on a different tip . . mysterious and deep. Classic jungle breaks recycled, stretched, filtered and otherwise manipulated, percolating eastern atmospherics, sneaky female vocal, and a creepy film sample ("I don't know where the fuck I am")

Intriguing angle taken by a producer known for epicly ravetastic happy hardcore shenanigans . . a bit before its time even.

Illicit (3) - I Dread / Peace Offering - 21-Jun-08 08:29 PM
Stunning. Illicit stuck two of his most perfect ragga jungle mashup tracks back to back on the 1st Ruffah Ras release = epic rudebwoy junglist bizness. Crisp, smashing amens and great choice of ragga, hiphop, and jungle breaks & samples mesh together near perfectly. Every drum hit, sample, and bass punch is well placed and clean sounding. Big ups to the man.

If you're a fan of ragga jungle and don't have this one, you'd better go find a copy.

Various - DJ's Unite Volume 2 - 28-Mar-08 05:01 PM
Wow, nice compilation here. Worth it just for the Chaos & Julia Set "Use Of Weapons" exclusive track (which is an absolute 5/5 smasher), but soooo many completely wicked old jungle tunes are compiled on this 2 x 12". Can't go into each and every one (you should already know them ;) Suffice it to say that there's nothing dull here. Unfortunately, there is the usual [lack of] loudness issue, but tunes do sound pretty good overall. Very highly recommended compilation to get maximum bang for the buck.

0=0 - Running / Reflux - 03-Feb-08 08:27 PM
I picked this up out of curiosity when it came out in the US and was blown away by the insanely intricate drum processing/re-programming (think Squarepusher vs. Remarc ?). Side A is an EPIC tune, with that "You better run, run, run; run away" vocal (not sure where the original is from, but it's been well abused), wicked amen edits, and nice-fitting synth noize/melody parts. Side B has a heavier, darker, haunted sound, again with ridiculously mashed up amen patterns and gnarly bass. After playing it out a few times though, I had to admit to myself that it just didn't sound right... while all the musical elements are sooooo tight, the mixing/mastering doesn't do it justice, and the mind-blowing production can't present itself with full effect even if you tweak the levels. Maybe he'll consider re-mastering in the future?
