How specific should you be with spaces etc. in barcodes?

Hey all! I'm new to this site, and I'm looking forward to making my first contribution to the site, when I have the possibility.

One thing I'm wondering though, is how the bar code thing works. The thing is, I use the barcodes/catalogue numbers in the search engine to find the exact record I have, to add it to my collection. I've had a few problems doing this with some cds, as the numbers aren't written the same way on the information page and on my cd. For example, I have Robbie Williams Greatest Hits, found at http://www.discogs.com/release/469944

The problem is, that on that page, the cat# (which is actually the barcode) is listed as 7243 8 74537 2 2, while on the cd and the case it's listed as 724387453722, making it impossible for me to find it in the search engine.

As I'm writing this, it feels kind of silly and nitpicky, but it does make it difficult to find the cd, and I'd be happy to know what the "rules" are, to help me in future contributions.

The sollution for this would be that the management finally fixes the search engine as brought up by so many for so many years.

As for how to enter it's very simple, "as on release" exactly how it's printed.

Search all:
7243 8 74537 2 2 - 1 result.
724387453722 - 0 results.

Catalog#:
724387453722 - 1 result.

Catalog# search compresses whitespace.

I think you might actually own Greatest Hits. Anyhow, the cat # should be typed exactly how it is printed on the release. I don't think the barcode should be considered as a variation of the cat #, even if it has the same digits, but the barcode should perhaps be entered exactly as it appears in the release notes (the formatting of the barcode could be the only difference between two issues of a release).
